The Gi Session With Braulio
December 9, 2008
Saturday 29th November saw the gi session of weekend training with BJJ black belt Braulio Estima.
It was the normal routine of warming up first with various cardio type exercises and drill until everyone had built up a fair sweat.
At this point, Braulio decided that he would focus the afternoons training session on the Side Control and all that goes with it. For those who are reading this and have not trained BJJ before, Side Control is pretty much as it sounds. Simply controlling your opponent on the floor from his/her side.
The side control, if secured properly is a very difficult position to escape from. Although everyone training had a good grounding in side control from many training sessions, it’s the little small subtle changes that Braulio taught that took everyones technical ability of this position to the next level ensuring that the next training sessions were going to be harder for the partner in the hold.
A fair bit of the the attacking part of the side control led the the inevitable arm and shoulder attacks, namely arm bars and Kimora’s.
It is actually quite amazing how many submissions can be achieved from this position and it is certainly a position that is worth training, training and re-training. Get this right and you arm yourself with a very useful bit of bjj weaponry. Needless to say, we were show some very good submissions from this position.
Securing an opponent in the side control properly also gives you time to think things through. Your opponent has to either escape or sit still and wait for your next move, which can be a large number of things. However, escaping from a securely held side control is relatively limited meaning that the person escaping is giving away some obvious attack opportunities.
As would be expected from someone of Braulios teaching ability, the students were extremely grateful for the newly found knowledge they were gaining and were more than enthusiastic to test it all out in the rolling session.
Attacking and defending the side control proved very effective for those who attended the training session and undoubtedly, those who couldn’t make the session are going to be in for a tough time the next time they are up for training.
At the end of the session, and after all the sweaty, knackered bods had a few moments to re-hydrate with a much needed water break and rest, Braulio gave out a few new gradings by way of belts and tips so congratulations go out to those hard working students.
I will list the names of those who were graded in a later posting.
For now, I’m going to cut this short but hope to add some video and a more detailed report of the techniques soon.
Thanks for reading
See you on the mat.
