March 6, 2010
For those of you who’ll not be able to make the British Open at the end of this month, there’s the Gracie Invitational gi and no gi competition coming up Sat 29th-30th May at the Seni-2010 show at London’s Excel Arena.
If you can make only one competition this year this is the one to go for.
GBCI Is Now Evolution Fightwear Distributor
March 6, 2010
Gracie Barra Channel Islands is pleased to announce that we have been chosen to be Evolution Fightwear distributor for the Channel Islands, Already a favorite among fighters at the academy.Be it BJJ or MMA Evolution Fightwear has it covered, BJJ gi’s rash guards, shorts, mma gloves the list goes on, From fight wear to casual wear you can’t go wrong with these tried and tested products.
A brief history of Evolution Fightwear taken from their web site www.evolutionxtreme.com
February 2001 saw the first Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy opening in the UK with the first MMA/BJJ dedicated store within it. We have supported both MMA and BJJ from the offset in the UK and have not attached ourselves to anyone show or one promotion and spread ourselves over the whole of the UK.
In the early days of Fit to Fight the creator and founder of and still current director of Evolution Fightwear Andy Smith was the first to import brands such as Tapout, Chute Boxe, Hunter, Vitamins and Minerals and Cyclone, truly opening up and pushing MMA from a merchandise point-of-view in the UK.
Realising early on the need for a UK brand, Evolution Fightwear was born. The first sponsored event was the first Gracie European Invitational and the first professional fighter to wear our products was Royce Gracie.
We have supported hundreds of up and coming athletes some have gone on to become house hold names such as Mark Weir, Paul Jenkins, Dan Hardy, James Thompson, Brad Picket, Che Mills, Michael Bisping, Ross Pointon, Jeff Lawson, Anderson Silva and to this day have always tried to continue in this vein. (see our list of past and present sponsored fighters in the fighters section)
In 2005 we attended 46 shows showing true dedication to the sport.
Whilst MMA has been Evolution’s main objective we have sponsored various other events and teams over the years ranging from The London Racers Professional Ice Hockey Team, the Lyrical Combat competition “Battle Scars”, Team Japspeed from British Drift Racing, Armwars Arm wrestling Events and the Arm Wrestling World championships as well as the British team
Gracie Barra Channel Islands Heading To The British Open 2010
February 19, 2010
It’s looking like Gracie Barra Channel Islands will be well represented in the British Open this year. With around half a dozen competitors from Jersey and the same from Guernsey who have already booked up and registered for the comp. Anyone who’s thinking of going and haven’t registered at this moment in time should do so a.s.a.p as it’s only at the end of next month that the British Open takes place.
Attacks on police and possible responses
February 11, 2010
I received an email from Gracie University this morning stating that they had a video posted which states why police should all have a good understanding of self defence and not rely solely on weapons, tasers, pepper spray etc.
Sometimes, attacks happen to quickly for any weapon to be drawn or there is also a very real possibility of the item malfunctioning.
Gracie University have uploaded a very good university showing possible responses to the attacks that are portrayed in the videos that were captured of the police officers being attacked.
These videos may not be suitable for children as they do show real attacks.
I hope you found the video interesting.

Matt Norris Wins Bronze At European BJJ Championships
January 31, 2010
Congratulations go out to Matt Norris who has managed to come back with a Bronze Medal at the European BJJ Championships taking place in Lisbon, Portugal.
He was fighting in the heavyweight division of the purple belts.
A quick summary based on messages received from Russ Allchin and Matt explain how and what happened but I will write a more detailed report once the guys return back to Jersey.
Mat weighed in at 94.2KG so he jsut about made the weight category.
I don’t know the name of his opponent at this time, but the guy jumped guard. They battled for position and Matts opponent swept and made full mount.
Matt managed to bridge him off and in the scramble that ensued, managed to finish the fight with an arm bar.
Good result Matt.
The second fight goes as follows and was texted to me from Matt.
Fight started with him jumping guard and trying to sweep my leg.
Went to floor and I tried to pass his guard. As I did he swept me and then tried to mount. I managed to keep it at half guard for a bit then made a mistake and he mounted.
Managed to bridge him off and I tried to break his guard.
Time was running out so I tried a sneaky choke that Stuey showed me whne standing in his guard but unfortunately it was to little to late.
Lost on points.
Well done to both Matt & Russ.
Russ Allchin European BJJ Championship Results
January 29, 2010
Hi all, a quick update courtesy of Matt Norris via www.twitter.com/chuckjsy regarding Russell Allchin’s fights at the European Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships currently taking place in Lisbon, Portugal.
Russell has had a tough competition proving that there are some good guys out there and nothing should be taken for granted.
I am going to put the exact Tweets (Twitter Posts) that Matt sent to me word for word and I will follow up with a more detailed report on their return to Jersey along with Video of the fights which Matt says he has taken.
Anyway, this is the posts for Russell’s first fight.
Matt Norris (MN) – Russ is fighting today. He has his weight division this morning then the open class in the afternoon.
MN – Russ has been called to the warm up area.
MN – Russ is weighing in, fingers crossed he makes the weight.
MN – Looks like he is fine and he is on the mat right in front of me.
MN – Here we go.
MN – He passed Russ’s guard for 2 points. Now in lockdown. (opponents name is still unknown to me)
MN – Trying for the sweep, he is attacking Russ’s arm.
MN – Still trying for the sweep and we are running out of time.
MN – His opponent is on his feet trying to pass Russ’s legs and it’s time. 2 points and an advantage for the win. Unlucky Russ.
That was the end of the fight in his weight class for Russ.
Matt Norris then texted me a few hours later to say he had updated Twitter with Russell’s Open Weight division fight.
Again, these are word for word Tweets that can be found at www.twitter.com/chuckjsy and further details will be posted along with video footage on their return.
Matt Norris (MN) – Just waiting for the blue open class to begin. Russ is in the warm up area but not much is going on at the mats at the moment.
MN – OK, his name has been called and Russ is moving to mat 2.
MN – Hot F**king damn, Russ has got a dump truck to fight. The guy is massive; here we go.
MN – Russ gone for half guard and the dump truck lays on him. He’s trying to to squash Russ through the mat.
MN – Russ is trying to sweep but he is struggling to move at the mo; shit the guy is big.
MN – Russ is trying to break away but the dude is on him.
MN – And it’s time. Dump truck got the advantage. Unlucky Russ. Just found out the guy is 118kg

I hope you enjoy it.
